DIY Product Photography

If you are searching for DIY Product photography, you are probably a business looking for DIY product photography advice. Before you go down a rabbit hole of free information on the web, please take a moment to read this post!

If you think it is expensive to hire a professional, wait until you hire an amateur.

Here at The Listing Factory, we can help you create great amazon images for your products. Before you try and make the financial investment (and time investment) in doing your own product photos, make sure you carefully consider what your options are and compare the two investments…

  1. Do-It-Yourself
  2. Hire a Professional Photography Service
First let’s take a look at what you will need to do a DIY amazon product listing.

What You'll Need

We list out for you everything you will need for DIY Product Photography

To really get some quality images and video, you will need the right equipment. Here are some of the items that we use in our studio that we would recommend for the first time product photographer.

Overall, you can expect to spend a few hundred dollars up to even a few thousand dollars on the right camera and accessories.

Lighting and Backgrounds

To take great DIY product photography is all about how you use the light.

If you are a small business, you will need plenty of space to take product photography. Once you purchase all of these items, you will need to store them somewhere. If you are not going to leave the equipment up and have a designated studio are for product photography, you will need to store it somewhere. (remember, it is a pain in the butt to put this stuff up and take it down)

How much does that square footage that you will be storing all of that equipment cost you every month?

Possible Scenario:

50 square feet x $15 per square foot = $750 per month

That is $750 per month that you could be using for other more cost effective purposes!

If you are a small business, you need to evaluate how valuable your time is. If you can be spending that time on a task that you would otherwise use to grow your business in another way, wouldn’t it be a better use of your time to do that instead of product photography?

How much would you pay yourself hourly if you were to hire yourself as a product photographer?

How much would you pay yourself hourly if you were to hire yourself to do whatever task you would be doing if you weren’t doing your own product photography?

The point is, your time is valuable, don’t waste it on learning how to do something that you don’t have experience doing. In the end, you will spend all of that time doing it yourself, but then get frustrated and hire a professional anyway! It happens all the time!

Possible Scenario:

24 hours per product x $30 per hour = $720 per product

That is $720 per product that you could be using for other more cost effective purposes!

Graphic Design Services

Do you have graphic design experience?

One thing that business owners forget to take into account is the fact that once you take the images and upload them to your computer, your job isn’t done! You aren’t even half way there!

Most of the time required to make great amazon and eCommerce images is AFTER you take the images. Retouching the images and creating the infographics is the biggest challenge!

If you DON’T have graphic design experience or have a graphic designer already hired, it is not worth the trouble taking your own product photography.

Possible Scenario 1: Hiring a Graphic Designer

24 hours per product x $15 per hour = $360 per product

Possible Scenario 2: DIY Graphic Design

24 hours per product x $30 per hour = $720 per product

That is $720 per product that you could be using for other more cost effective purposes!

Training Courses and Books

We have found these Product photography books and courses to be helpful if you are still interested in DIY product photography.

Last but not least, DIY product photography takes a lot of practice (and not to mention trial and error). You can expect to waste a lot of time learning the settings on your camera, lighting techniques, etc.

Hopefully this article has shines a light on how DIY photography doesn’t necessarily save you money. In fact, if you add up all of the items listed above you can see how it may actually me MORE expensive to do it yourself! Expensive gear, your valuable time, space, graphic design, and expensive courses and books adds up quick! It could cost you thousands of dollars just on one product!

We hope that you consider The Listing Factory as your amazon photography service provider. If you would like to consider your options, that is find too! We compared ourselves to the competition in this article here…
